On the banks of the Klang River, between 1866 and 1870, Selangor was torn apart by one of the bloodiest civil wars in its history. What began with the killing of a single youth in Kuala Lumpur spiraled into a brutal conflict of sieges, betrayals, and blockades. In this episode, 'The Battle for Klang: Tin, Treachery and Tragedy at the Gateway to Selangor', we uncover how rival chiefs and migrant Sumatran clans fought for mastery of a river valley that controlled the tin trade — the very source of Selangor’s wealth and power. Along the way, we encounter: • the grievances of Raja Mahdi and the rise of his revolt, • the Kedah prince who stood in his way, • how revenge determined friend and foe, and dictated the shifting fortunes of war, • the innovative artillery tactics used on both sides, • the extraordinary “floating forts” that turned the river into a battlefield, • and the ragtag force of mercenaries led by a French captain that tipped the balance. This is the story of how civil war reshaped Selangor — and how its outcome paved the way for British intervention throughout the Malay Peninsula.
