Chi Zhang: Caustic line, for Violin, Viola and Violoncello Caustic line is a peculiar curve produced by the refraction of light through a curved surface. Which is only captured by the naked eye when sunlight passes through the edge of a cup. -------- Chi Zhang Composer Chi Zhang Born in Mengzhou, is currently an undergraduate student in the Composition Department of the Central Conservatory of Music. He studied with Professors Sun Jingcheng, Chang Hua, Zou Hang, Du Yong, and Yao Chen, as well as Associate Professor Wang Tianyang and Teacher Wang Julan during his early piano training. Since 2018, he has been awarded in numerous domestic and international competitions, including First Prize at the New York International Music Competition, Second Prize at the “City of Barletta” International Competition in Italy, Second Prize in the Young Composers category of the Vienna International Composition Competition (with no First Prize awarded), dual First Prizes at the Dunai Composition Competition in Serbia, and Overall Second Place at the Odin International Composition Competition as its youngest participant. His work Mulan was supported by the Beijing Cultural and Art Foundation, and he has also won awards in the China International College Students’ Innovation Competition, Innovation Training Program, and the “Rising Stars” Entrepreneurship Competition. During his studies, Zhang has composed works such as Journey of Spring, Joy, and Youth Bloom for major school ceremonies and concerts, often serving as both composer and conductor. His choral and orchestral works—including Maybe Goodbye, Morning Light of the New Village, and South Window Introduction—have been performed at the Henan Arts Center, the Taihu Stage Arts Center of the NCPA, and broadcast on Heilongjiang TV Spring Festival Gala. Beyond composition, he has been active as a pianist and creator since 2017, performing at international piano product launches in Shanghai, the Sanya Piano Music Week “Outstanding Young Composers” concert, and recording for CCTV’s Feng Hua Guo Yue. His practice spans piano, choral, symphonic, and musical theater works, reflecting both versatility and vitality in his artistic development.
