This is a clip from "God, I Need This Job", the third episode (93rd overall) of the fifth season of the long running 1979-86 ABC sitcom "Benson", which was a spin-off of the wildly controversial 1977-81 sitcom "Soap", created by Susan Harris (who'd later create "The Golden Girls" and "Empty Nest" for NBC). The episode originally aired on ABC on Friday, September 30, 1983. Everyone in the Governor's mansion is concerned about the mental state of butler-turned-state budget director Benson DuBois (Robert Guillaume). He has discovered that his former employers, the Tate family, are looking to have Jessica Tate (special guest star Katherine Helmond) declared dead, as she has been missing for two years. (On the final episode of "Soap", Jessica was facing down a firing squad when a gunshot is heard as the camera freezes on Jessica, ending the series on a cliffhanger). Imagine Benson's shock when Jessica Tate herself appears to him. The staff are worried about him because as he insists that he is talking to Jessica, no one can hear or see her. The episode is filled with flashbacks as Jessica and Benson recount the last four years of his life since he left his job as the Tate family butler to help work in the Governor's Mansion, as Jessica's cousin was Governor Eugene Gatling (James Noble). Jessica leaves after a while, but not before she drops a big bombshell on Benson and the viewers. She breaks the fourth wall when she declares that she is still alive, but in a coma in South America, and that she'll find a way out of it. Jessica and Benson say their goodbyes and declares their love for one another. As she walks out the door at 1:16, there is a subtle reference to "Soap" as the show's theme music briefly plays. *This episode was meant to give "Soap" viewers a bit of closure as the show ended on a cliffhanger
