ASSOCIATED PRESS Kalamazoo, Michigan – 31 July 2023 ++QUALITY AS INCOMING++ 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Theresa Ruedisueli, Arcadia Home Care & Staffing: ++PARTIALLY COVERED++ “It’s been fantastic, and we’re so thankful for this Supreme Court ruling to have gone in this way. It was certainly a big win. Vladimir’s care is around the clock. It’s 24/7. He cannot get out of bed and do his morning routine. He can’t eat, he can’t cook, he can’t drive. All of the things that you and I take for granted, just getting ready for work in the morning, he can’t do without help. So, when we think about all of those things and the required assistance for each of those things, if those would have been removed because of this decision or if the Supreme Court ruling had gone another way, all of that care would have been lost and Vladdy would have had to have been institutionalized.” ASSOCIATED PRESS ARCHIVE: West Bloomfield Township, Michigan – 13 May 2022 7. Various of the therapist working on Konstantinov’s leg 8. Demanuel helps Konstantinov get into a van 9. The card game between Demanuel and Konstantinov ends with a handshake STORYLINE: The Michigan Supreme Court is out with a decision that provides critical relief for thousands of people who were badly injured in car wrecks. The court says people getting care for catastrophic crashes before summer 2019 won’t lose their lifetime insurance benefits. For decades, people injured in crashes were entitled to lifetime payment for “all reasonable charges” related to care and rehabilitation. But a new state law set a fee schedule and a cap on reimbursements not covered by Medicare. Suddenly, 18,000 people already receiving long-term benefits were at risk of losing them. In a 5-2 opinion released Monday, the Supreme Court said a “vested contractual right” to ongoing benefits “cannot be stripped away or diminished,” especially when lawmakers failed to declare an intent to do so when they changed the law. =========================================================== Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
