Our morning visit to Elephant Island on November 15, 2023 while aboard Atlas Ocean Voyages' World Navigator. Deep swells precluded safe embarkation to the zodiacs (thanks James Jeffreys for that clip) so we viewed the bay at Point Wild from the ship. Point Wild is where Ernest Shackleton & his crew took refuge after their ship was trapped in the ice and sank. Shackleton and five men set off in one of the modified life boats to sail to South Georgia Island to get help. Twenty two of his men under the leadership of Frank Wild survived four and a half months of Antarctic winter before being rescued in 1916 by the Chilean Naval vessel Yelcho, commanded by Captain Luis Alberto Pardo.
