Okho (1989) by Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001) for three djembes. This piece was composed to celebrate the French bicentennial and is scored for three performers on djembe and concert bass drum or large african drum. Xenakis first encountered the West African djembe in the studio of trio le cercle, to whom the work is dedicated. Okho finds a rare balance between the visceral and cerebral, creating a kind of tribal modernism. The work is in eight sections featuring extremely limited rhythmic material recombined in solos, duos, and trios. The performers are challenged with creating a multitude of different sounds on the drums utilizing their hands, fingers, and drum sticks in different combinations throughout the piece. This performance is from a live recital at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Gildenhorn Recital Hall; on campus at the University of Maryland - College Park. The performers are: Lee Hinkle, djembe and concert bass drum Paul Keesling, djembe Danny Villanueva, djembe We used Innovative Percussion 5AT / Timpani Combo sticks on the djembes and an Innovative Percussion CB-4 Concert Bass Drum / Hard Mallet on the concert bass drum.
