Using only an axe, a crosscut saw, chisels, and a drawknife, Proenneke felled spruce trees, shaped each log by hand, and built a cabin from the ground up — alone. He built the furniture inside it. He carved the wooden hinges. He raised a food cache on posts with metal bear guards. He built a dock. He shaped spoons from salvaged wood. Then he lived there. For thirty years. Through fifty-below winters and spring thaws. Through moose harvests and ice fishing. Through injuries with no clinic for miles.
