Rations were just as important to keeping soldiers alive in battle as bullets. The average soldier required 2400-4000 calories per day during the Pacific War. American infantry/marines typically ate pre-cooked K or C rations at 2700-3700 calories. The Japanese logistics collapsed during WW2 leading troops on Pacific islands to go without food leading to mass starvation. But for the lucky Japanese who were given rations they typically carried uncooked rice, miso, canned raw meat or vegetables, pickled plums and biscuits. The Japanese infantry were reduced often to foraging to make ends meet and had to carry and cook their food. Cooking fires exposed them to enemy attacks and they lived mostly off small amounts of rice only reaching around 2160 calories per day. Because of their rice diet, the IJA often succumbed to beriberi disease among other ailments. It is estimated that out of 2.3 million Japanese deaths, 1.4 came about from disease and starvation. #shorts #history #fyp #pacificwarchannel
