At Smile Ranch Dentistry, we require an IBCLC assessment before we perform a frenectomy on any nursing baby. Nursing dyads struggle for a multiplicity of reasons which may not be attributed to a tethered lip or tongue. For example, a mother with insufficient glandular tissue or some hormonal dysfunction may result in suboptimal nursing and performing a frenectomy on an infant in this scenario could be unnecessary. An IBCLC is highly trained and able to identify how babies function, and provide the best care plan for pre, during, and post-procedure. In particular, IBCLC's that have advanced training such as the Jennifer Tow’s class are able to create the most effective care plans around the release. In addition, IBCLC's are able to diagnose many other issues that may be affecting the babies oral functions and breastfeeding success that are outside our scope as dentists.
