In a smartphone-obsessed age, the art of calligraphy is in danger of dying out. This is because computers can turn out hundreds of copies of the beautifully written text in minutes. There are around 30,000 calligraphers in India but they have little work. Delhi alone has more than 5,000 Urdu calligraphers, most of whom find it difficult to eke out a living. Despite these challenges, there are some calligraphers who are trying to revive the centuries-old art of decorative handwriting... One such calligrapher is Mohammaed Javed. Interestingly, most work in calligraphy nowadays is limited to the reproduction of Quranic verses and some Urdu literature, where people love the stylish, free-flowing, decorative form of text. The last two years have been very challenging for calligraphers first due to the Covid pandemic and now due to rising inflation. Over centuries, calligraphy held a strange fascination for common people and artists alike. It may sound incredible, but till a few decades ago, entire newspapers would be handwritten by katibs or calligraphers every day. However, with the computerization of the Urdu press and publishing industry, most calligraphers fell on hard times. So, is the ink drying for the centuries-old art of traditional Indian calligraphy? Javed doesn't think so. #calligraphy #calligraphyart #writing Subscribe to The Times of India's YouTube channel: http://goo.gl/WgIatu For daily news & updates and exclusive stories, follow the Times of India Facebook: / timesofindia Instagram: / timesofindia Follow TOI+ for well-researched and in-depth news and analysis Facebook: / timesofindiaplus Twitter: / toiplus Instagram: / toi_plus
