As we watch the evacuations and the firefighting efforts across Manitoba and Saskatchewan, our thoughts are with all of the communities impacted by these massive and out-of-control wildfires. We also know that these threats continue to increase, and we want to highlight possible solutions and the hope that Indigenous fire stewardship can offer. Take a moment to learn about what that looks like by listening to Joe Gilchrest, from the Skeetchestn Indian Band, who practices cultural burning on his land and the dramatic changes that unfolded on the landscape as a result. But the benefits of cultural burning–good fire–go beyond preventing wildfires. It’s also deeply connected to the ability of the land to be resilient in the face of other threats, like flooding. These are not easy times, and year after year, we see Indigenous communities across the North threatened by wildfire. But solutions do exist, and we can find hope by collectively moving together towards understanding the benefits of Indigenous fire stewardship and supporting efforts to radically reshape our relationship with fire.
