For feedback and business queries, please email us at [email protected] This video is about finding the name of the Terpene compounds. New kind of method is required for identifying the name and we discussed it step by step method. The naming is based on the number of the isoprene units present in that compounds. Terpenes are a class of organic compounds derived from isoprene units (C₅H₈). The head-to-tail rule is a fundamental principle used to name terpenes based on the connectivity of these isoprene units. The Isoprene Unit An isoprene unit has the following structure: CH₂=C(CH₃)-CH=CH₂ The head of the isoprene unit is the carbon atom attached to the methyl group (CH₃), and the tail is the carbon atom at the end of the double bond (CH₂). The Head-to-Tail Rule According to the head-to-tail rule, the isoprene units in a terpene are connected in such a way that the head of one isoprene unit is joined to the tail of the next. This arrangement results in a linear or cyclic structure. Naming Terpenes The names of terpenes are based on their number of isoprene units. Common prefixes used for terpenes include: Mono-: One isoprene unit (monoterpene) Sesqui-: Three isoprene units (sesquiterpene) Di-: Two isoprene units (diterpene) Tri-: Three isoprene units (triterpene) Tetra-: Four isoprene units (tetraterpene) For business queries, send message to [email protected] with your phone number .
