31 yard Spartan 300 body on a diesel Battle Chassis (2024 I believe?) I've had this footage for quite some time now and finally decided to get it uploaded. In this video you will see me finishing up my Monday route, including my alleys and a couple other non-alley 300 gallon containers. I enjoyed this truck a lot. Being used to the Scorpion style trucks that the City of Tucson operates, this truck feels very similar. Some things I actually felt the Spartan 300 does a better job with, like the way it handles 300 gallon containers. Overall if the city acquired units like this, I would be okay with driving it. There were some things I didn't like but that's going to be the case with any truck I drive. Pros: -Very easy operation, controls are user friendly and simple -Feels very similar to the Scorpion ASLs that us city guys are used to operating -Easy to learn with no steep learning curve, felt I picked up the operation of this truck in less than an hour -Good arm speed, my route was finished at about the same time as I do in my regular truck -Can do alleys, an issue that has come up with other demo trucks is the inability to go through all alleys, like the ZR -Handles 300s better than the Scorpions. I was really surprised about this one, I was worried the grippers were too small and would pinch the 300s. The Scorpions, despite the grippers designed for this size container, pinch them occasionally and cause damage. -Regrip function is great for the 300s. The Scorpions don't have this function so I usually have to hold the gripper switch while I dump heavy containers, but the Regrip function of the Spartan 300 can easily be activated with a single tap.of the screen. In this video you can see me turn it on before I go into the alleys -Packs well with a fast packer cycle. On this route I usually push myself my first load to make my second load as light as I can, and I was able to get to where I normally do any other day with ease in this truck -Arm is gentle while operating. I felt like I wasn't over gripping cans as easily which made it easier to control spillage with overloaded containers. The way the arm would cycle also felt a lot smoother, no sudden jerks which would increase the hydraulic cylinder life. Neutral: -Switch position is unideal. I kept bumping into them, plus their position made my wrist cramp up at the end of the day. This is something that can always be adjusted by the shop and will also vary depending on chassis. -Grippers hang in air. Not sure if this is something that can be adjusted or not, but I did notice that during the undump phase of the arm cycle, the grippers would hang in the air for a second before the arm would come down. I felt that this was something that provided unnecessary time loss, on top of that I was not flipping lids at all. I use flipped lids as a marker to let me know if I have been down a street or not. This does, however, result is less damage to the cans. -Touchscreen PTO panel. I can see this being a potential point of failure that could leave a driver broken down and unable to remain mobile. I personally am not a fan of touchscreen controls on vehicles in general but that's just me. I do like the controls for unloading at the landfill giving a warning message to confirm before actually opening the tailgate/raising the body. I've heard stories of drivers accidentally opening the tailgate on route by hitting the wrong button, so having a failsafe is great. Cons -After having used the Scorpions, I am not the biggest fan of this style of packer. I am a little biased in this reasoning but I did notice after going through heavier alleys on a different day (no footage) that the hopper was getting backed up. It was still packing down but I had to sit and wait a few minutes to let it all go down before continuing. Also people occasionally throw very large objects inside the 300 gallons that I could see getting jammed up in the hopper. -I could be wrong but it seemed like the body didn't raise as high as the Scorpions when it came time to dump out at the landfill. I noticed that it seemed like a good chunk of bags, dirt and other debris would stay in the body. It wasn't a lot but it was some. -Re-grip feature can pinch 96 gallon and smaller containers if left on. I think this was mainly due to the heat making the cans more malleable but I noticed if I left it on after servicing 300s I was occasionally damaging the smaller cans. This is partly operator error since I should have been turning it on and off as needed instead of leaving it on and forgetting about it. -Requires daily clean out. The Scorpions do not require a clean out, so majority of drivers with the city are accustomed to not having to exit the truck near the tipping area. I personally don't mind it, doing front load I was doing it several times a day. Hope y'all enjoyed the video, until next time.
