Miguel de Cervantes lived one of the most extraordinary lives in literary history — yet most people only know him as the author of Don Quixote. The full story is far more dramatic than any novel he ever wrote. Born into poverty in sixteenth-century Spain, Cervantes fought at the Battle of Lepanto where his left hand was permanently shattered. He spent five years as a slave in Algiers, attempting four desperate escapes. He returned to Spain expecting recognition and received nothing. He failed as a playwright, suffered through a loveless marriage, worked as a despised tax collector, and was thrown into prison for debts he may never have owed. Then, approaching sixty with nothing to show for a lifetime of struggle, he wrote a book that would change literature forever. Don Quixote became the most translated novel in history after the Bible. It invented techniques that every novelist since has used. It asked a question humanity still cannot answer: is it better to see the world as it is, or to fight for the world as it should be? This documentary covers the complete life of Miguel de Cervantes — from soldier to slave, from prisoner to literary immortal — in one of the greatest rags-to-legacy stories ever told.
