A few weeks ago, I posted a video of me playing this song on the banjo at home here in Mexico while singing along. Now, here's a second version with me on guitar. This West Indian folk tune, often referred to as The John B. Sails, was first documented in 1916 by Richard Le Gallienne in Harper's Magazine and popularized by Carl Sandburg in his 1927 book The American Songbag. The lyrics recount the misadventures of a sailing crew on the schooner John B. In 1958, the song was adapted and recorded by The Kingston Trio, giving it exposure to American audiences and establishing it as part of the folk music revival of the era. In 1965, Al Jardine of The Beach Boys suggested they cover the song, calling it Sloop John B and reworking the arrangement to suit the band's harmonies and musical style. That's Manuel González accompanying me, at a gig in Queretaro, where we both live.
