Mr. Sandman (Ballard) by The Chordettes, orchestra conducted by Archie Bleyer The final blockbuster hit of 1954 was a product of Cadence Records head Archie Bleyer, who first heard the tune via Vaughn Monroe’s pleasant-but-unimaginative original version (also posted to this channel) and somehow came up with this highly creative arrangement for four female voices. The tune was written by Pat Ballard, composer of the Four Knights hit “I Get So Lonely” (also posted). The Chordettes recording spent seven weeks atop the U.S. record charts. That’s Archie Bleyer you hear at the beginning, setting the tempo by slapping his knees. Both he and the Chordettes had spent several years as important regulars on Arthur Godfrey’s radio and television shows but were no longer “little Godfreys” when “Mr. Sandman” was recorded.
