It lies on the River Wye, 15 miles south-west of Sheffield. It is the largest settlement and only town within the boundaries of the Peak District National Park. Bakewell itself was probably founded in Anglo-Saxon times in the Anglian kingdom of Mercia. The name Bakewell means a spring or stream of a woman named Badeca or Beadeca,so deriving from a personal name with the Old English suffix wella. In 949, it was called Badecanwelle, and in the 1086 Domesday Book, Badequelle. Holme Bank Mine is located in Derbyshire in the 300-million-year-old carboniferous limestone beds to be found around Bakewell, more specifically in the highest reaches of the Monsal Dale limestone formation. Along with the nearby Pretoria mine, Holme Bank was the last of two operational chert mines in Derbyshire, although initial operations date back to 1778 when it began list as a quarry. Holme Hall is a privately owned 17th-century country house and is a Grade I listed building built on the site of a previous manor house in 1627 for Barnard Wells of Stoke Hall. His daughter Mary married Henry Bradshaw, brother of regicide John Bradshaw. Another daughter and coheiress married Robert Eyre and inherited Holme in 1658. The Bakewell Old House Museum was built around 1534 and is a typical 16th-century yeoman's house that now houses a museum. It tells the story of the house as well as the lives of people from Bakewell and this part of the Peak District. All Saints' church was founded in 920, during Anglo-Saxon times and the churchyard has two 9th-century crosses. During restoration work, in the 1840s, many carved fragments of Anglo-Saxon stonework were found in and around the porch, as well as some ancient stone coffins. The present church was started in the 12th century in Norman style; however, only the west front and part of the nave survive from that time. The remainder of the church was built between 1220 and 1240. The spire was added in 1340 but, was taken down in 1825, and the tower also removed in 1830. Between 1841 and 1844, it was almost completely rebuilt as it had become dangerous. as part of the restoration by William Flockton. The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop dates back to 1860. Bakewell Bridge is a unique five-arched bridge, which crosses the River Wye and dates back to the 13th century. It is one of the oldest still standing in Britain and is an excellent example of medieval engineering.
