Fjall (Germany) — Through Night — 2026 EP

The debut of this solo act from Thuringia Fjall sketches an melancholic topography carved mostly from post black metal and glimpses of a more orthodox approach, although to a lesser extent. The result is a blackened hybridisation, bleeding harmony, despondency and abrasion with great finesse. Guitars unfurl in luminous saccharine arcs, shimmering with a fragile sweetness, only to be hardened into tremolo-driven peaks, pushing the soundscape towards a harsher tone. These transitions become almost like emotional convulsions, as though the music is struggling to decide which path to take. Beneath this, the percussion alternates between driving urgency and more atmospheric approach, allowing the compositions to breathe without dissolving into indulgence. Fjall resists the cavernous shriek typical of black metal, opting instead for a timbre closer to hardcore’s raw-throated one, which lends the record a more humane quality. "Through Night" unfolds as a single meditation on endurance at the edge of collapse. As images conveyed of veiled light, fading warmth, blurred vision and yawning abysses intertwine into a unified storytelling of inner winter. The narrator seems trapped within darkness yet refuses to be extinguished. Hope is never presented as triumphant or radiant, but as a fragile element, and even when the end seems imminent, there remains a compulsion to move forward, rather than succumb to numbness. As a debut, "Through Night" is far from being a cumbersome first step, instead it is a promising ascent.
