Planting Tomatoes Directly into Potting Soil Bags - This year I’ll be growing most of my plants directly into the bags you purchase from the local store. Why spend money on pots? Everything you need is in the bag! For most larger plants you’ll want a 1.5 cubic foot bag of potting soil mix; this will provide enough room for a mature plant and good root development. To start you’ll want to break up any clumps in the bag of mix any way you find best. Be careful not to tear open the bag when doing so. If there’s a lighter colored side, preferably white, you want that to be the side facing up as it will reflect sunlight rather than absorb it, keeping the mix cooler. Using a tool you see fit, I used a simple hand saw, cut or punch several drain holes into the bottom side of the bag. You want rough cuts or holes so twist and be messy, the rougher the cut the better chance it will not get clogged. Gently lay the bag into position with the side you just cut on the ground. Using a sharp knife or razor, cut an X into the center of the top of the bag. Create a hole by pushing some mix to the sides. Place your plant into the hole and bury by bringing soil from the sides back over the plant. If you look closely at the bottom of your tomato plant, you will see little fuzzy hairs. If buried below the soil, those fuzzy hairs will turn into roots. For this reason, many prefer to bury the tomato plant several inches deeper to encourage more root development. I have not found a significant difference in yield so I typically just plant them at the soil line from their existing pot. An exception would be if your tomato plant is really tall and skinny, or leggy, as burying more of the stem will give the plant more support.
