(19 May 1997) Natural Sound United States troops began pulling back from the conflict in Zaire on Monday, although they aren't leaving the region altogether. After rebel leader Laurent Kabila's relatively bloodless take-over of the country's capital, the pressure has eased on foreign troops standing by to evacuate foreign nationals from Kinshasa. About one hundred and fifty members of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit were air lifted out of Brazzaville, the capital of Congo on Monday. They have been stationed there, across the river from Kinshasa, for several weeks as tension within Zaire mounted. The U-S was one of several countries to establish a military presence in Brazzaville as the position of Zaire's ailing President Mobutu Sese Seko grew increasingly tenuous. The troops who left on Monday have been relocated to a U-S naval vessel anchored off Pointe Noire. The ship will remain there on standby. About a third of the more than three hundred U-S marines posted in Brazzaville will remain on the ground to monitor the situation.
