The Varsoviana appeared in Australia around 1856 and became one of the most popular couple dances of its time - to the extent many were fanatical about always dancing with a particular special partner. Originally a Scandinavian folk dance in three parts it was launched as a ballroom dance via Paris and named Varsovienne as a show of support for the Poles during times of Russian oppression. The name means 'Woman of Warsaw' and Varsovienne is the French spelling, Varsoviana the correct English spelling. However there are all sorts of hybrids between the including Vars O' Vienna at Nariel as in many parts of Australia it was called the 'Waltz of Vienna'. Apart from the erroneous Austrian connection other claimants were the Italians with 'La Versuviana'. In the British ballroom it was frequently called La Varsoviana or 'La Var' for short. The Irish have an up tempo version called 'Shoe the Donkey'. Video footage demonstrated by dancers of Bush Dance & Music Club of Bendigo, directed by Peter Ellis, May 2013.
