SOUNDBITE: (English) Major Matthew Bird, British Army: "Yesterday, the Airport Camp was exposed to a number of attacks by indirect fire. Unfortunately, one of these attacks resulted in the death of three British serviceman, serving with the Royal Air Force here in Basra, and the injury of a number of others. Our thoughts are clearly with the families of those victims." 5. Close-up of Union Jack badge on sleeve 6. SOUNDBITE: (English) Major Matthew Bird, British Army: "The militia who are responsible for these attacks, they act indiscriminately. We must remember that although they fire rockets almost every day most of them do not hit the British camps and many of them in fact fall on residential areas, on civilian houses in Basra and places like that. So these people, they are criminals and they are the enemy of all the people of Iraq and not just the British forces." 7. Exterior of airport building 8. Various of airport STORYLINE An attack on a British military compound in southern Iraq has left three troops killed and several others wounded, a military spokesman said on Friday. Major Matthew Bird said the incident occurred in the southern city of Basra on Thursday when the Airport Camp came under several indirect fire attacks. Indirect fire is a term usually used for mortars and rockets. "Unfortunately, one of these attacks resulted in the death of three British serviceman, serving with the Royal Air Force here in Basra, and the injury of a number of others," said Bird. "Our thoughts are clearly with the families of those victims," he added. Attacks on British bases in Basra occur almost every day. Bird said those responsible for such attacks acted "indiscriminately". "We must remember that although they fire rockets almost every day most of them do not hit the British camps and many of them in fact fall on residential areas, on civilian houses in Basra and places like that," Bird said. The latest deaths raises to six the number of British troops killed in Iraq this month. A total of 162 British soldiers have been killed in the Iraq war. Britain has withdrawn hundreds of troops from Iraq, leaving a force of around 5,500 based mainly on the fringes of Basra, Iraq's second-largest city, 550 kilometres (340 miles) southeast of Baghdad. Their bases frequently come under mortar fire from Shiite militants in the city.
