This video is about 'Niruddesher Kahini', the first science fiction story in Bengali literature, written by Scientist Jagadish Chandra Bose Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose (1858–1937) was one of the greatest scientists of the Indian subcontinent—equally proficient in physics, biology, and plant physiology. He was one of the pioneers of radio and microwave research and is globally renowned for his experiments on plant sensitivity. By inventing the Crescograph, he was the first to make the subtle movements of plants measurable. His research is recognized as a pioneering contribution to Indian science. In 1896, Jagadish Chandra Bose took up his pen to assist his nephew, H. Bose, with his business venture. However, as a renowned scientist, the idea of writing a hair oil advertisement felt embarrassing. To avoid this awkwardness, he concealed his identity and submitted the story 'Niruddesher Kahini' (The Story of the Missing) anonymously. Ultimately, the judges deemed it the best entry, and it won the first Kuntolin Prize. And thus, the first successful science fiction short story in Bengali literature was born. Let me tell you what the story is about. You see, the story is divided into two parts. The first part describes real-life weather conditions, while the second part offers a fictional scientific solution. During the storm, without wasting a moment, the story-teller threw a bottle of Kuntolin oil into the sea. Miraculously, at the touch of the oil, the turbulent storm calmed down. And thus, nature's fury was tamed by hair oil, and that is precisely why the storm never reached Kolkata. When oil is poured onto water, it creates an ultra-thin layer that acts like an elastic membrane. In scientific terms, this thin film reduces the water's surface tension. Consequently, small ripples cannot form, and even larger waves gradually lose their energy. Needless to say, Jagadish Chandra Bose exaggerated this scientific fact for the sake of the story This is what my video aims to share with you.
