Recent times have seen Barron releasing albums with an almost annual frequency. His latest (Beyond This Place) arrived in May of 2024, featuring rising star saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins and veteran vibraphonist Steve Nelson, alongside Barron’s trio cohorts Kiyoshi Kitagawa (bass) and Johnathan Blake (drums), who joined Barron at this Toulouse gig. Early on, the pianist worked with Yusef Lateef, James Moody and Dizzy Gillespie. A decade ago, Barron played regularly in a successful duo formation with bassman Dave Holland, the pair touring their 2014 album (The Art Of Conversation) with marked enthusiasm. A few years prior, in 2009, Barron was gigging with Charlie Haden, a bassist of even greater fame. In 2016, Barron was amongst the first band leaders to appreciate the talents of flautist and singer Elena Pinderhughes, who guested with his trio at the Montréal Jazz Festival. Barron is gifted with a gentle touch, confidently fluid in his articulations. Drummer Blake brushes his low-slung cymbals, while bassist Kitagawa coaxes out deft low-lines. The audience applause is down in the mix, but we can still hear their appreciative response to each solo. Barron pens original material, but also plays well-chosen compositions by the likes of Thelonious Monk (his lesser-heard ‘Shuffle Boil’), Charlie Haden (the ruminative ‘Nightfall’, from the album the bassist made with pianist John Taylor), a Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn ballad medley (on solo piano) and ‘The Surrey With The Fringe On Top’, from the musical Oklahoma!. Barron’s own ‘Bud-Like’ is a highlight, driven by a swift pulse, and featuring an extended drum display from Blake, the leader following up with some tearaway piano runs. Barron customarily gets all over (and under), each tune. He seeks jazz sophistication, soloing with an elegant Steinway flow, peppering his keyboard rivulets with regular spacings, prompting the deep listening attention of his audiences.
