Bengal Governor Takes Stock Of Violence In Asansol | NYOOOZ TV

The situation in Asansol is tensed but under control, though stray incidents of violence still surfacing. Police on Friday arrested around 70 people in raids on those instigating violence. West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi has reached Asansol to examine the ground realities after the clashes. The Governor will convene meeting with district officials at the Asansol Circuit House and will then visit some disturbed areas. The clashes had broken on Ram Navami day when police tried to stop Saffron activists exhibiting strength with arms ammunition. Deteriorating situation compelled chief minister Mamata Banerjee to head to the state secretariat directly from the airport, after she returned from her three-day visit to Delhi, and convene an emergency meeting of senior officials in order to review the situation in the Asansol-Ranigunj area. Police gathered video clips of arson and loot from members of both communities to identify those who masterminded the clashes. A man was killed and several injured after a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP)-backed Ram Navami procession allegedly tried to enter a Muslim-dominated locality in Raniganj on March 26. Two others also lost their lives in related incidents across North 24 Parganas and Purulia districts around that time. While chief minister Mamata Banerjee maintains that saffron activists triggered violence in the state, BJP leaders have accused the police of allowing people from the minority community to attack them.
