YAMAHA　XJ400D XJ400は1980年6月に発売された。 400ccクラスのツインカム4気筒モデルとして先陣を切った1979年4月発売のカワサキ・Z400FXにいち早く対応し、ヤマハとしては初となる400ccDOHC4気筒モデルとして市場に投入された。ライバル車種には、先行していたZ400FXの他、後発のスズキ・GSX400F（1981年4月発売）やホンダ・CBX400F（1981年11月発売）などがある。搭載された空冷DOHC2バルブ4気筒エンジンには、SUキャブと4-1-2方式の集合マフラーを採用し、45馬力を誇った。当時から今日に受け継がれるヤマハの「軽量・スリム・コンパクト」という設計思想に基づいて、セルモーターやジェネレーターがシリンダーブロックの背後に配置されており、エンジンは並列2気筒なみのコンパクトサイズを実現した。また、足つき性は良く、サスペンションのセッティングはややソフトながら、相応の安定性を発揮していた。XJ400はスタイルと操縦性にバランスが取れたヤマハらしい洗練されたスタイリングの高性能モデルだった。 XJ400は1980年代半ばに製造販売は終了となったが、1989年発売のカワサキ・ゼファーに端を発した1990年代のネイキッドブームを受け、事実上の後継車種と言える空冷DOHC4バルブ4気筒エンジン搭載のXJR400が1993年に発売されるに至った。 The XJ400 was released in June 1980. It was the first Yamaha 400cc DOHC 4-cylinder model to be released on the market in response to the Kawasaki Z400FX released in April 1979, which took the lead as a 400cc-class twin-cam 4-cylinder model. In addition to the preceding Z400FX, rival cars include the late-starting Suzuki GSX400F (released in April 1981) and Honda CBX400F (released in November 1981). The air-cooled DOHC 2-valve 4-cylinder engine equipped with a SU cab and 4-1-2 system muffler boasts 45 horsepower. Based on Yamaha's design concept of "lightweight, slim, and compact" that has been inherited since then, the starter motor and generator are located behind the cylinder block, and the engine is as compact as a parallel two-cylinder engine. In addition, it had good foot contact, and although the suspension setting was somewhat soft, it exhibited a certain degree of stability. The XJ400 was a high-performance model with Yamaha's sophisticated styling that balanced the style and maneuverability. Although the XJ400 was discontinued in the mid 1980s, it received a naked boom in the 1990s that originated in Kawasaki Zephyr released in 1989, and it was virtually replaced by an air-cooled DOHC 4-valve 4-cylinder engine. The XJR400 was launched in 1993.
