The Dhanusha Constituency-1 election controversy has become one of the most talked-about political disputes in Nepal’s recent election. Even after the Election Commission of Nepal declared Matrika Prasad Yadav of NCP as the winner, questions remain about who the real Member of Parliament (MP) from Dhanusha-1 actually is. Just two days before the election, the Election Commission cancelled the candidacy of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) candidate Kishor Shah Kamal, claiming that he was listed in the loan blacklist of the Credit Information Center. Following that decision, Kishor Shah filed two petitions at the Supreme Court of Nepal, challenging both the blacklist claim and the cancellation of his candidacy. During the election, confusion spread among voters in Dhanusha-1. Reports suggested that votes cast for the RSP’s election symbol (bell) might not be counted because the candidate’s nomination had already been cancelled. Despite this, the RSP urged its supporters to vote for the symbol. After the election, the vote counting process itself became controversial. While the Election Commission initially decided to wait for the Supreme Court’s order before declaring the final winner, the result was later announced with Matrika Prasad Yadav receiving 10,430 votes and being declared the winner. However, the situation changed again when the Supreme Court issued an interim order stating that Kishor Shah was not listed in the blacklist of the Credit Information Center and instructed Nepal Rastra Bank to remove his name if it existed in the database. This decision has created new uncertainty about the legitimacy of the election result in Dhanusha-1. If the Supreme Court eventually rules that the Election Commission wrongly cancelled Kishor Shah’s candidacy, the votes cast during the election could potentially change the final outcome. In this video, we explain: • What exactly happened in the Dhanusha-1 election controversy • Why the Election Commission cancelled Kishor Shah’s candidacy • What the Supreme Court interim order means • Whether Matrika Prasad Yadav could lose his seat • What the final Supreme Court decision might change This political dispute has raised serious questions about Nepal’s electoral process, institutional accountability, and transparency in candidate eligibility decisions.
