(Originally filmed July 22nd, 2025) Join us for Nelson Thorp's presentation on the life, military service, and aviation career of his father Ernest Thorp, as part of a series endorsing the recently-released biography Prairie Flyers of Central Illinois: A Century of Aviation in America's Heartland, hosted by co-authors Edith Brady-Lunny and Denis Hambucken. Captain Ernest N. Thorp (1921-2017) was a DeWitt County resident and World War II veteran who served as a B-17 pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945. During his time in the service, he spent nine months as a POW after his plane was shot down over the North Sea. In the decades following the war, he continued to fly as a member of the International Flying Farmers until his last flight in 2010. Information provided by Captain Thorp's obituary: https://obits.dewittdailynews.com/obi... Captain Thorp's story is one of many to be discussed in Prairie Flyers of Central Illinois, a new biography by Edith Brady-Lunny, Denis Hambucken, and the late John Warner, which tells the tales of numerous Flying Farmers aviators in the Midwest.
