Continuing with the goal of getting the spa pool or hot tub ready to use Adam looks at the concrete pad that will be supporting it. The spa pool weighs roughly 375kg before adding water so it needs to be well supported. The concrete slab or pad is cracked and sagging in areas and there is a drop in level near the fence line which needs to be properly retained so Adam decides that the current pad needs to be removed and replaced. He creates a level boxing and adds a plywood barrier on the retaining wall side. This can later be removed for a nice clean finish. He digs out the retaining area and layers in bricks and cinder blocks which he has gathered. The bricks and blocks are pulled out and concrete is poured and the bricks and clocks are then layered back in to form a strong retaining wall. This area is now ready for the concrete slab or pad to be poured. Adam discovers a working storm water drain along the way. He clears it and also discovers a spider which reminds him of the nursary rhyme 'Incy Wincy Spider'. Adam used 12 bags of 20kg ready-mix concrete. At $8 NZD per bag that is $96 NZD. He used all salvaged wood to frame and box the retaining wall. He also used bricks and cinder blocks to layer in between the concrete to ad strength and limit the amount of read-mix required. In New Zealand building costs and products are expensive so recycling and reusing can save a lot of money and reduce what is going into the landfill.
