Doctor explains Reflux in Babies | Symptoms, causes, treatment

In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains gastroesophageal reflux in babies. Reflux is when a baby brings up milk, or is sick, during or shortly after feeding. It's very common and usually gets better on its own. Posseting is when babies bring up a small amount of milk (usually a teaspoonful) without seeming to mind. Posseting is common in babies under six months old for completely normal physiological reasons and doesn’t need medication. Causes of reflux: Reflux can occur because the ring of muscle between the oesophagus (food pipe) and stomach is not fully developed. This means food or milk can travel back up the food pipe. When is reflux most common in children? Reflux usually starts before a baby is 8 weeks old and gets better by the time they're 1. What are symptoms of reflux in babies? According to NHS England, symptoms of reflux in babies include: bringing up milk or being sick during or shortly after feeding coughing or hiccupping when feeding being unsettled during feeding swallowing or gulping after burping or feeding crying and not settling not gaining weight as they're not keeping enough food down. Sometimes babies may have signs of reflux but will not bring up milk or be sick. This is known as silent reflux. How do you treat reflux? You can help ease your baby’s reflux by making small changes to the way you feed them. Continue to breastfeed, if possible Make sure your baby takes breaks during a feed. Burp your baby when feeding them. Give your baby short, but regular feeds. Keeping your baby upright for a bit after feeding. There is also no evidence to support the use of different or specialised bottle teats for preventing colic or reflux.
