Hello 😊 Here’s a transcription I’ve done of the Chris Rea song “Fool (If You Think It’s Over)”. This version comes from his 1988 compilation album New Light Through Old Windows, with Eoghan O’Neill on bass. You can find the transcription at Muzento in the Beginner Songs category. Funny thing — when I got this request, I knew the song right away… but not this version. I had no idea there was another take with a busier bass line. Sorry about that, Russ — I’ll get the other version to you next month 🙂 There’s nothing technically tricky about this line. It’s a functional, rock-solid part: strong harmonic support, steady rhythms, and just enough variation to keep it interesting. Simple doesn’t mean lesser — that’s one of the beautiful things about bass. It can take on so many different roles in a song and in a band. There are a bunch of ways you could play this. I encourage you to find a version that feels comfortable — but also experiment with something that pushes you a bit out of your comfort zone. You might stumble onto a new way to play it 😉 For my take, I focused on keeping the rhythm solid and having a big sound with minimal space between notes. Open strings can help with that.
