(22 Nov 2013) A statuette featured in the 1941 movie "The Maltese Falcon" is being offered for sale at a New York City auction. Bonhams says the black figurine is the highlight of a Nov. 25 auction. Stephanie Connell with Bonhams said they expect the statue to fetch "mid seven-figures." "The Maltese Falcon. It is arguably the prop of all props. That it's a film about the item and it is the item from that film. It's an iconic noir film. One of the most famous films of all time. So to have that as well as Sam Spade's office chair from the film too, I think is a magnificently rare opportunity for collectors," said Connell. The statuette was central to the classic John Huston film, which starred Humphrey Bogart as a private eye. Bonhams says it's etched with a Warner Bros. inventory number and is the only version known to have appeared in the movie. The auction house says it's the first time the statuette has come to auction. The current owner has had the statuette for decades. The figurine has been featured at the Pompidou Centre in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Also up for sale is Steve McQueen's racing jacket from the film "Le Mans." Connell said the jacket is one of the highlights of the auction. "The thing with Steve McQueen is that he is almost more than a movie star. The association with the cars, the motorbikes, the racing. It means the fans of Steve McQueen tend to be people who are extremely interested in cars and racing as well as his work as an actor. So it's a combination of the two and I think those two collecting fields coming together means there is huge demand with anything to do with McQueen particularly if it relates to motor racing or motor vehicles," said Connell. Also included in the sale is John Wayne's cowboy hat, a letter from Marilyn Monroe to her foster mother, a Vivien Leigh negligee from Gone with the Wind, and Michael Keaton's Batman suit.
