In the Greek Orthodox tradition, illumination is both our ultimate human destiny and the greatest revelation of divine love. Philip Glass’s Annunciation and David von Kampen’s Trisagion are all based on beloved Orthodox hymns that invite the listener to participate in these acts of divine love. Von Kampen’s work musically explores the Orthodox baptismal hymn, the sacrament of illumination. And Glass’s Annunciation is based on the communion hymn of the feast of the Annunciation which glorifies the Incarnation as the ultimate expression of divine love. As Orthodox believe that all of creation is an expression of this love, our union with the divine is our ultimate human destiny. And this union is most intimately experienced in the ritual of holy communion as the hymns on tonight’s program affirm. It is my hope as a pianist and chanter, that this evening’s program will allow the listener to participate in the beauty of this expression of love.
