Kyphosis is characterized by the pronounced rounding of the thoracic region of the spine. In lordosis, the lumbar curve of the backbone is exaggerated inward. Scoliosis is the deformity found when the spinal column develops a lateral curve. Scoliosis is the most prevalent type of spinal deformity. It is present in 3% of the world population. Commonly it occurs in children and adolescents. Lordosis and kyphosis occur less often and usually in adults. The spine is made up of 33 individual bones called vertebrae. The vertebra are numbered and divided into four regions. The normal spine is not a straight line when viewed from the side. The thoracic region of the backbone has a normal forward curvature with a range from 20 to 50 degrees and the lumbar and cervical regions of the spine have reverse curvatures. Kyphosis occurs when the curve of the thoracic region of the spine is greater than 50 degrees. Lordosis occurs when the curve of the lumbar region of the spine is greater than 60 degrees.Scoliosis occurs when a spinal curvature greater than 10 degrees to the right or to the left is present.
