I’ve owned this Defender for years and taken it on loads of trips, but for what we’ve got planned next, the way it drives just isn’t cutting it. It’s slow, clunky, and hard work over long distances, so it’s finally time for a proper upgrade. In this series, I’m swapping a BMW M57 diesel engine into my Defender, along with a modern ZF 8 speed automatic gearbox. The goal is simple. More power, better fuel efficiency, and a Defender that’s actually enjoyable to drive. In Part 1, we kick things off by explaining why I’m doing the swap, what the plan is, and picking up a BMW X5 donor vehicle so we can get started. That engine gets stripped down and ready to work on.
