Causes of the October Revolution | Dr Daniel Beer

In this video Dr Daniel explores the causes of the October Revolution, the second revolution to take place in Russian in 1917, which saw the fall of the Provisional Government and the Bolshevik seizure of power. The first revolution of 1917 took place in February (according to the Julian calendar still being used in Russia at this point). This saw the collapse of the autocratic Tsarist regime and the establishment of a Provisional Government committed to democratic reform. The second revolution took place on 24-25 October (or 6-7 November according to the new calendar). This saw the Provisional Government replaced by a Bolshevik coup which sought to rally the people with the call of 'All power to the Soviets' and promise of 'peace, bread and land'. There then followed years of civil war as the Bolsheviks sought to consolidate power.
