그리스는 에게해 건너 동쪽으로 튀르키예와 맞닿아 있으며, 북쪽 육로로 연결된 매우 가까운 나라입니다. 지금 방문하는 튀르키예의 에페소도 고대 그리스가 건설한 거대한 도시 유적지입니다. 즉, 에페소는 서부 소아시아의 에게해 연안(현재의 튀르키예 셀추크)에 위치한, 고대 그리스의 아테네에 의해 기원전 9세기에 건립된 식민도시이며, 당시에 약 25만명이 거주하였다고 합니다. 따라서 에페소는 주변 국가인 스파르타, 페르시아, 페르가몬, 로마 등의 흥망성쇠에 따라 식민지화 되는 역사로 얼룩져 있습니다. 유적지 주변에는 아직 자리를 차지 못한 많은 돌들이 흩어져 있었습니다. 이 돌들은 과거 역사 퍼즐을 맞추기 위해 기다리는 듯하였습니다. 이렇듯 드넓은 공간에 자리한 흔적들이 고대도시 모습을 상상케 합니다. Greece is a very close country, across the Aegean Sea and bordering Türkiye to the east, and connected by a land route to the north. Ephesus in Türkiye, which we are currently visiting, is also a huge city ruins built by ancient Greece. In other words, Ephesus is a colonial city founded in the 9th century BC by Athens of ancient Greece, located on the Aegean coast of western Asia Minor. It is said that about 250,000 people lived at the time. Therefore, Ephesus is stained with a history of colonization following the rise and fall of neighboring countries such as Sparta, Persia, Pergamon, and Rome. There were many stones scattered around the ruins that had not yet been placed. These stones seemed to be waiting to piece together a historical puzzle. The traces in this vast space make me imagine what an ancient city looked like.
