Emperors Ole Clothing; The Howard Hughes Corporation’s Fatal Finale (Humane Architecture). The hosts for this show were Martin Despang and Jay Fidell. The discussion was: While Honolulu unlike every other city does not have anymore architectural journalist criticism ( see previous episodes : 'Archi-pelago's Criticality of Criticism' / 'Archi-pelago's Cruciality of Criticism' ) this show format feels obligated to report and review on the newest developments in Honolulu although if it had the chance it rather chose not to as bad as the developments continue to be. While each and every building in Howard Hughes’s Kakaako has been addressed somewhere in the past 361 shows, some more than once, the two final buildings addressed here in this show almost leave one speechless, but this show still tries to find the right words : Two towers by the late Robert A. M. Stern in his signature classical classicist style. The Howard Hughes Cooperation could / should have chosen emerging architects, finally done an architectural competition but it chose not to and exhume postmodernism in form of the two towering nails in the coffin their Kakaako as an environmentally, socially, culturally, failed urbanistic and architectural model. The takeaway was: The reactionary purely profit oriented real estate model of Howard Hughes Kakaako gets embodies accordingly by a replica of good ole 1930’s America skyscrapers. What more does it take to wake up and see that the future of America is ahead vs behind. It takes the emerging generation of architects together with informed citizens.
