We like to romanticize the "Good Old Days" of New York City—gas lamps, cobblestones, and sleigh rides down Fifth Avenue. But the Gilded Age and the early 20th Century had a much darker reality. In a city where the cold could kill you and a gift could poison you, the holiday season isn't always about peace on earth. In this episode of Plain Sight Docs , we open the archives to reveal seven grim mysteries that turned the holidays into a nightmare. From the infamous "Poisoned Chalice" of the Knickerbocker Club to the man who physically refused to die despite a "Murder Trust" trying to kill him, these are the stories the city tried to forget. We uncover the federal government's controversial role in the Prohibition poisonings, the first successful use of criminal profiling to catch the "Mad Bomber," and the corrupt Vice Squad scandal that brought down a Major. Warning: This documentary contains historical accounts of crime, violence, and disaster. Viewer discretion is advised. It killed Cornish's landlady, Katherine Adams, instead. The Seabury Commission (1931): A massive investigation into NYC corruption. Witness Vivian Gordon was found strangled in Van Cortlandt Park days before she was set to testify against the NYPD Vice Squad. Brooklyn Theater Fire (1876): A fire started by a gas light ignited painted canvas scenery. Due to inward-opening doors and panic, at least 295 people died. Michael Malloy (1933): Known as "Durable Mike" or "The Rasputin of the Bronx," Malloy survived being fed antifreeze, turpentine, rat poison, and being hit by a taxi, before finally succumbing to coal gas. 1926 Prohibition Poisonings: To deter drinking, the US government mandated the addition of methanol (wood alcohol) to industrial alcohol. This resulted in an estimated 10,000 deaths during Prohibition. The Mad Bomber (1940-1956): George Metesky planted over 30 pipe bombs in NYC public spaces such as Radio City Music Hall and Grand Central Terminal over a 16-year period due to a workplace grievance. Key Legal & Forensic Concepts Circumstantial Evidence: The Molineux trials highlighted the difficulty of convicting based solely on indirect evidence (handwriting and purchase history) without direct physical evidence like DNA or fingerprints, which were not yet standard. Criminal Profiling: The Mad Bomber case is considered a landmark in forensic psychology. Dr. James Brussel's profile of the suspect (including the prediction about the double-breasted suit) is cited as one of the first successful uses of offender profiling in the US Double Jeopardy & Admissibility: Molineux's conviction was overturned because evidence of a previous unproven crime (the death of Henry Barnet) was used to prejudice the jury in the Adams case. This sets a precedent regarding the admissibility of prior bad acts. Sovereign Immunity: The Prohibition of poisonings raises complex legal questions about government liability. While officials argued they had no duty to ensure the safety of illegal substances, medical examiners argued it constituted "state-sanctioned murder." Insurance Fraud: The "Murder Trust" case involving Michael Malloy demonstrates the legal mechanics of "insurable interest" and conspiracy to commit murder for financial gain.
