Forgiveness is hard. And yet Jesus says, "if you don’t forgive others, your Father will not forgive your offenses.” Why? What is forgiveness? How can we forgive people who have hurt us so terribly? In this sermon, we wrestle through questions like these as we see Jesus' teachings in Matthew 6:12, 6:14-15, 18:21-35; Luke 17:3-4. On our own, forgiveness is far out of reach. We're more likely to hold a grudge, let bitterness secretly creep in, or feel like we have to pretend the wrong wasn't really wrong. Let's turn to Jesus to learn how to forgive in His ways. This is the fourth message from our "Gospel-Shaped Relationships" series, where we see that because of Christ, we live differently together. CHAPTERS: 00:00 Introduction & Big Idea 06:25 Reading Matthew 18:21-35 and more... 11:27 Why Must We Forgive? 23:33 What Is Forgiveness? 31:11 Forgiveness is NOT... 39:20 How can we apply this & grow from God's Word? 41:22 Resources for help in how to forgive and how to seek forgiveness (including wisdom on how to apologize) 54:50 Closing Prayer QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION: 1. Am I carrying a 'heavy pack' of resentment because I’m waiting for a debt to be paid that the other person can never actually settle? 2. Is my hesitation to forgive rooted in a fear that I must also restore trust or reconcile before it is safe to do so? (See Safety Note below.) 3. When I look at the '100 denarii' someone owes me, does it feel larger than the '10,000 talents' God has forgiven me—and if so, what part of His grace have I not yet fully grasped? Safety Note: If you are in an unsafe or abusive situation, please know that God’s call to peace is not a call to remain in harm or excuse neglect. Your safety matters.
