"Uncle Tom's Cabin" is a 1927 American synchronized sound drama film directed by Harry A. Pollard and released by Universal Pictures. Although the film lacks audible dialogue, it features a synchronized musical score and sound effects using the Western Electric sound-on-film process. This adaptation of Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is notable as Universal's first sound feature and the last version of the story filmed without audible dialogue. In this adaptation, all major slave roles, except for Uncle Tom himself, were portrayed by white actors. Actress Mona Ray played the slave Topsy in blackface, while the characters Eliza, George, Cassie, and Harry were depicted with very light skin to reflect their mixed-race heritage. The film was released on DVD by Kino in 1999. The title role was initially played by renowned stage actor Charles Gilpin, who left the production due to dissatisfaction with the role's portrayal. He was replaced by James B. Lowe, who reshot the scenes previously filmed with Gilpin. In 1958, the film was rereleased with added sound and narration by Raymond Massey.
