The closer the values, the stronger the color contrast — and the more the painting seems to glow. This is why Monet, Inness, and Bunker could create shimmering light with muted colors: Their values were tightly controlled, allowing color temperature to sing. How Light Direction Affects Value and Color Keys Nature offers different value patterns depending on where you stand relative to the sun: Looking into the sun (contre‑jour): ● Values cluster at the extremes — very light and very dark — with fewer middle values. Color contrast is low. Looking away from the sun: ● Values gather in the middle range. This creates a mid‑key scene in which color contrasts become more pronounced. Looking 90° to the sun: ● Values are more evenly spread. You can choose to follow nature or invent a stronger key for artistic impact. Remember: You are not beholden to nature. Use the value key that best supports your painting’s story. Putting It All Together Value, temperature, and relativity are inseparable. A single color can appear: ● true because of relativity ● rich because of the temperature ● luminous because of vibration Your job is to design the value key first, then let color work within that structure. Light transforms the ordinary or even beautiful into the exceptional. I aim to capture these fleeting moments and help people see things again through new eyes.
