The Last Days of Elstedgård Elstedgård was once full of life. Its walls echoed with children's laughter, and the air was filled with the scent of burning wood from the bonfire where children and caretakers gathered. For years, it served as a recreational center and after-school facility (SFO), providing young ones with a space to learn and play in a natural setting. However, its glory days were long gone. In 2019, the building was closed due to a rat infestation that had taken over the interiors, making it impossible for the facility to continue operating. From that moment on, Elstedgård stood abandoned, left at the mercy of time, vandals, and nature. The passing years brought only decay. The wind howled through broken windows, the walls were covered in dampness, and the floors were littered with scattered debris and shattered glass. The roof began to leak in multiple places, and the wooden beams slowly rotted. Elstedgård became a shadow of its former self, a place that had lost its soul. Without owners or caretakers, it fell into ruin, attracting not only local urban explorers but also those with less noble intentions. Residents of the area reported unsettling noises coming from the building at night – but there was no one left to intervene. At the end of 2023 at night the building met the fate of many other abandoned structures. A fire broke out in the middle of the night. By the time firefighters arrived, the flames had already consumed the roof, and a towering column of smoke rose over Lystrup. Wooden beams cracked under the intensity of the fire, and the brick walls, which had stood witness to history for 150 years, began to crumble and collapse under the heat.. Local residents, alarmed by the sudden glow in the night sky, watched helplessly as a place full of memories vanished in the flames. Despite the quick response of the fire department, little could be saved. Due to the instability of the structure and the intensity of the fire, authorities decided on a controlled burn to prevent further danger. Elstedgård, which had been home to childhood dreams and memories for decades, ceased to exist. The cause of the fire remains unknown, though the police suspect arson. Just a day earlier, small fires had broken out in various parts of the building, which may indicate deliberate action. The investigation is ongoing, but one thing is certain – even if Elstedgård is rebuilt in some form, it will never be the same place remembered by generations of children and caretakers. Today, only charred foundations remain where the once-proud estate stood, covered in layers of ash and burnt wood remnants. From the nearby road, one can only see the lone trees that once surrounded the building, now serving as a silent reminder of what once was. Local residents pass by the site with nostalgia and sadness, recalling the days when children ran through the garden and the air was filled with joyful chatter. Some say that after sunset, among the burned ruins, echoes of the past can still be heard – children's laughter, the crackling of a bonfire, the sounds of little ones playing in the garden. Is it just imagination, or do the spirits of the past still linger in the place that was once their home? Though the land is still for sale, no one is in a hurry to develop it. Perhaps it's because Elstedgård was more than just a building – it was a place of memories, and its story, though ended in tragic fire, still lives on in the hearts of those who knew it.
