Jolene Edgar wrote an article, because that’s what she does, in Allure that just got published and I thought was quite good. She spoke to some prominent surgeons who do facelifts about which non surgical products or procedures give them issues when performing facelifts. The consensus she lays out corresponds pretty well with what I’m hearing at conferences in my private and public conversations. HA fillers caused the least issues and should just be dissolved prior to operating - that goes for facelifts or any other procedure, like rhinoplasty or chin augmentation. A history of extensive biostimulatory treatments like dilute Radiesse or Sculptra can cause issues intraoperatively where the tissue planes are scarred and sticky or difficult to separate. This can affect early quality and increases risks of complications like nerve damage or hematoma post op. If the treatments were several years back or if they were conservative and not too frequent, there’s usually no issues. A history of frequent deep energy device treatments or poorly placed threads can also be a problem. But what comes up in my conversations a lot is the scarring from poorly done “starter facelifts” is more often a bigger issue. I say this to many of my patients - facelift results last for 10 years or less. Revisions can be complex and risky. Get surgery when you need it, but don’t be talked into early surgery. “Preventative” surgery is not a thing. If you’re considering a real facelift and you’re a good candidate, I would skip bio stimulators for a year or two and make sure you know where all the HA fillers have been placed so they can be dissolved prior to the procedure.
