Movie icon Glenn Ford entered the world of television series as Marshal Sam Cade in a 1971 modern western, CADE’S COUNTY. Think of the premise as a precursor to LONGMIRE or JUSTIFIED. Ford was one of the biggest stars of the late forties, fifties and sixties and his series was highly anticipated. Unfortunately, CADE’S COUNTY only lasted one season. As a result, several Glenn Ford movies were made by editing together episodes, including the one you’re about to see. THE MARSHAL OF MADRID was directed by Richard Donner and features, in addition to Glenn and his sidekick deputy, the great Edgar Buchanan, Bobby Darin as a bazooka shooting, horseback riding outlaw named…Billy! No, he’s not Billy the Kid…he only thinks he is! It’s a zany performance by Darin but he makes it work. Linda Cristal is Darin’s wife and young, up and coming singer, Leif Garrett is his son. Others in the cast include Victor Campos and Glenn’s son, Peter, as deputies. While tracking down Darin, Glenn and Edgar question and bad mouth the gun dealer who sold Darin his weapons, including a six-gun similar to the one Billy the Kid supposedly used. Darin challenges John Chisum, or so he thinks, into a fast draw shootout in a saloon. Lots of fun stuff for up-and-coming director Richard Donner to set up. There’s even a climatic shootout between Darin and Ford, who he thinks is lawman Pat Garrett. THE MARSHAL OF MADRID’s second half deals with illegal border crossings, features a major shootout and has an even more impressive guest cast. James Gregory, Tim Scott, Richard Rust, Rodolfo Acosta, Victor Campos and, the future wife of actor Robert Fuller, Jennifer Savidge in a bit as a spunky deputy. It’s her first screen role and landed her a treasured SAG card. Richard Donner had directed several TV westerns including top episodes of WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE and HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL. This film was done in 1971 and he was soon to be helming SUPERMAN with Christopher Reeves, the LETHAL WEAPON series and the big budget western spoof, MAVERICK, with Mel Gibson, James Garner and Jodie Foster.
