We've Almost Forgotten God (words & music by Jerry Marshall Wilson)

I apologize that the camera doesn't show the piano keys. This song changes chords so frequently (about every 2 beats) that I couldn't turn my head and look toward the camera. I was afraid that if I didn't put the camera directly in front of me, no one would be able to hear the vocal. I made plenty of bobbles on the piano, and because I had to focus so much on the playing, the ends of my words wandered in pitch in several places. But as my Uncle Ray would say, it can't hurt the song (at least not permanently). :-) Like many great songs, this song seems more true today than it was back when Pap wrote it. It's track 1 on the Words of Life album. Pap sang lead on both verses (which is unusual for him), with Uncle Ray coming in on lead on the lines "to live a Christian life," "a shame but yet it is so," and "they took the prayers from our schools." When Ray came in on those lines, Pap switched to tenor. To me, the song finds a stronger gear when the chorus starts, and their harmony together really shines. Ray sang the line "this land where our Christian fathers once trod" as a solo each time in the chorus, and Pap came back in on harmony on the line, "We've Almost Forgotten God." Pap did not write the song with the repeating lines that I did at the end of my performance, which some performers would call the "tag." As I mentioned in a previous video, Pap did not like tags. He said that if you were going to repeat 1 or 2 lines, you should just sing the entire chorus again. Though I knew Pap wouldn't approve, I added those tags in hopes that I might get the piano playing smoother at least once during those particular parts. Instead, I just made more mistakes. :-) Pap also didn't like going to the high chord (in this case B flat) at the end of the last chorus before concluding the song. To him, doing that was just a gimmick (much like tags). However, he let Uncle Henry and the steel player talk him into doing it in the recording. I happen to like the ending, and sometimes, I like tags, especially if they're done with a slight variation on one or two words/notes. The flag you see in the video is flying over a car dealership on the interstate between Knoxville and Chattanooga. I pulled over on my way home from a tennis tournament and shot that footage with my phone. The siren just happened to go by as I was filming. The black and white footage you see is public domain footage of Madalyn O'Hair, a mother who fought school prayer all the way to the US Supreme Court back in the 1960's. Though she won her case, her son later became a Christian. Recently, the current Supreme Court ruled that state employees (such as teachers, coaches, and administrators) can in fact pray openly during and after school functions. They found that allowing them to do so does not infringe upon the rights of students or taxpayers, while forbidding them from doing so infringes upon their free speech and religious freedom. While I believe that neither prayer nor religion should ever be forced on anyone, I think that anyone should be allowed to pray when they feel like it, as long as it doesn't directly interfere with or disrupt someone else. I don't think merely being offended or disagreeing constitutes a true disruption, for if it does, then there really is no free speech. Those opposed to government employees praying often cite "separation of church and state;" however, that phrase appears no where in the US Constitution nor any other official US document. It appeared in a letter from Jefferson to a group of Baptists, assuring them that the US Government would never try to interfere with or limit religious expression in any way. What the constitution does say is "Congress shall make no law respecting religion." In that context, the word "respecting" means "concerning." I apologize for going so far down that rabbit hole. I think Pap wrote a beautiful song with this one; I think he and Ray sang it extremely well; and Uncle Henry did some really beautiful picking. His turnaround in the middle is perhaps one of my favorite things I've heard him play. I uploaded the footage of him being reunited with that old guitar 6 years ago. I left it in this video so that some of our new Acorns could see it too. Thanks for tunning into Original Thursday. Lord willing, we'll upload a special song for Father's Day on the Saturday before the holiday. I'll also be uploading a song, Lord willing, for Charlie Louvin's birthday, and possibly one for Pap's birthday. Both are in July.
