On 9 December, the Lok Sabha passed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill of 2019, giving rise to huge protests across various cities in India. The state has reacted to these protests with extreme and brute force. On 13 December—when the bill received the assent of the president, becoming law— the students of Delhi’s Jamia Millia University called a march to Parliament in protest. To halt the demonstration, Delhi police entered the campus, pelted stones at and lathi charged the protestors, and released tear-gas shells. It detained close to TK students. The university has cancelled its examinations and declared leave until 5 January. The Citizenship (Amendment) Act of 2019 paves the way for individuals from the Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh to gain Indian citizenship. It effectively ensures that Muslims from these three countries would continue to be treated as illegal immigrants, and would be denied the benefits of the act.
