Still experimenting with drumheads on this Sonor AQ1. So before changing all tom batters to some Evans Onyx heads, I thought I might as well soundcheck the current set-up with the G2 Coated heads, then to the Onyx by way of comparison. EQ / light compression is exactly the same for both, but tuning wise its 100% ears, nothing too scientific. I did not resort to any tuning instrumentation tuning to exactly the same frequency blah blah... This is by no means a 'which one is better' comparison. If anything, I felt that the 'true' difference is in how they felt under the stick. You can hear an audible difference, albeit very minor in difference; • the Onyx had more attack and punch • the G2 Coated is more open (more noticeable on floor tom) and warmer • both head types are suitable on the AQ1, with varying control and focus Recording this highlighted how hard it is to create an accurate, concise comparison video when it comes to testing drumheads, even cymbals and drums. Would I have been better tuning them at exactly the same pitch using a TuneBot or Drum Dial? Ultimately I went by tuning the batter by third interval (vs the reso head being higher) by ears only, and by feel as well. I felt that the Onyx felt more comfortable at being tuned lower / loose. They are after all the same head, with an extra durability added to the Onyx thanks to the matte black coating. For now, the Onyx will stay on, and I'll even change the kick to Onyx EMAD pronto.
