(30 Aug 2018) French President Emmanuel Macron said that "we must rethink the European security architecture," as he pushed for a continent-wide effort to create "strategic partnerships, including in terms of defence, with our closest neighbors." Speaking during a news conference in Helsinki with his Finnish counterpart, Macron explained he wants Europe to take responsibility for its own defence and that the EU shouldn't rely so much on the United States for its own security. Macron also said NATO remains an important alliance, expressing satisfaction at that Finland's interest in joining a European defence cooperation. Answering a journalist's question about Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Macron said there is a "nationalist vision and there is a progressive vision which are clearly facing off on migratory, economic and other topics". He said "there are some people who want to fracture Europe, who want less Europe, less European solidarity" adding that whilst he was not naive when it came to the continent's defence, migratory or economic issues, Europe needed to be reinforced. Macron was in Helsinki where he met with Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Juha Sipila during the second leg of a Nordic tour that also took him to Copenhagen, Denmark.
