Resource Team Lead Seng Chan explains the FEMA flood map regulatory process in less than 90 seconds. http://www.dewberry.com Transcript: Hello. My name is Sang Chan. As a resilience solution employee at Dewberry, I serve as a FEMA contractor. In this capacity, I ensure that communities receive proper due process when FEMA issues a new flood map. Through the National Flood Insurance program, property owners in participating communities are able to purchase flood insurance to help protect against flood losses. To become or even remain eligible for participation in the program, communities must adopt the new maps. However, before a map can be legally adopted, there are three phases that a map must go through as part of the map adoption process. This includes a community meeting held with community officials, residents, FEMA, and its contractors to discuss updates made to the maps, on its adoption, and other frequently asked questions; a 90 day appeal period that provides a community the opportunity to submit appeals regarding the proposed flood hazard determinations found on the new maps; and a six months compliance period where communities must adopt or modify ordinances that correspond to the new maps. FEMA does enforce strict standards for developing and updating flood hazard information. It's important to them that communities are allowed the opportunity to comment before the maps become finalized at the end of the six month compliance period. And that is the FEMA flood map regulatory process.
